The author is from Hiroshima and a grandchild of an atomic bomb victim. The setting of the story was Hiroshima 25 years after the bombing. The main character, Nozomi, a Junior high school girl, gradually sympathizes with her family members’ deep grief in losing their loved ones while hearing about their experiences. The story climaxes with the ceremony of floating lanterns in the water. The event is held on the evening of August 6 every year at the bank of the Motoyasu River in Hiroshima to console the spirits of deceased victims. This book received the Shogakukan Award for Children’s Literature and the Fukuda Kiyoto Prize in 2014.
