Original version of Atomic energy for military purposes: the official report on the development of the atomic bomb under the auspices of the United States government, 1940-1945. Released to the public on August 12, 1945, just days after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9. Leslie R. Groves, Jr., the director of the Manhattan Project, commissioned Smyth to write the report, which describes the scientific and technical developments in the U.S. since 1940 directed toward the military use of energy from atomic nuclei.
